A predator has been stalking us since the day we were born. Most of us wouldn’t recognize him as a predator. His name is gluttony.

The reason we don’t recognize him as a predator is because he’s been hanging around us for so long. We in America have so much abundance that we’ve almost convinced ourselves that living with him is our right. We have so many resources and an abundance of everything we could ever need and because of that this predator has taken hold of our hearts.

The word can be used in a positive sense (e.g., the jealousy of God), meaning a passionate commitment to something which rightly belongs to one. It can also be used in a negative sense (e.g., human jealousy), to mean a self-destructive human emotion similar to envy.

God’s Great Love

How great is God’s love for us? God’s great love can best be seen in the sacrifice of His one and only Son. In Mark 15 Jesus’ death is recorded this way:

33 At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

The Bible considers laziness to be a sin against both God and society. God ordained work, and for a person who is capable of working not to do so is in direct violation of God’s command. It is also a sin against society for a person to require others to support him or her when they are fully capable of providing for their own needs. We are commanded to work and add to the betterment of society.
