Faith Like a Child

In Matthew 18:1-4 the disciples of Jesus asked him, “Who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Jesus called a little child into their midst and said, “Unless you humble yourself like this little child, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Little children put their total trust in those who care for them. They have an innate sense of dependence on grownups. We need to develop the same attitude toward God.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to him, and he will direct your paths.”
Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” The word translated “fear” in this verse does not mean that we are afraid of a God who is “out to get us.” It carries the idea of trust and reverence. Reverence is a type of respect reserved only for God. Our lives are in the hands of a loving, holy, wise and just God. If we obey Him, we will be blessed. If we don’t submit to Him, we will suffer consequences.
The choice is ours. We can put our confidence in God and be victorious. If we trust in ourselves, we will ultimately fail. The wise path is summed up in James 4:10, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”
